FIFO Life: What to Pack for Your First Swing
The essential gear list every rookie needs before heading to site. Don't get caught without these basics.
Heading to your first FIFO swing can be daunting. You've got your flight details, your site induction is done, but staring at that empty bag, you realize you have no idea what you actually need.
The Essentials
1. Entertainment
Camp life can be boring. Once the shift is done and you've had dinner, you've got hours to kill.
- Laptop/Tablet: Pre-load it with movies and shows. Camp Wi-Fi is notoriously bad.
- Headphones: Noise-cancelling is a must. The walls are thin.
2. Comfort
- Your Own Pillow: Camp pillows are often terrible. Bring your own for a good night's sleep.
- Thongs (Flip Flops): For the showers. Never go barefoot in communal showers.
3. Food & Supplements
- Vitamins: Shift work is hard on the body.
- Snacks: Camp food is plentiful but not always great. Bring your favorite protein bars or treats.
What NOT to Pack
- Too many clothes: You'll be in uniform 12 hours a day. You only need a few sets of civvies for the mess and travel.
- Alcohol: Most sites are dry or have strict limits. Don't risk it.
Final Tip
Pack light for your first swing. You'll quickly learn what you use and what stays in the bag. Good luck!
